You’re just days away from settling into your new home, but there are some things you need to do first to ensure your family is comfortable after a stressful move! You’ve already arranged for utilities to be turned on, and your family has their essential boxes in tow as you make your way to your next chapter! With so many things on your to-do list, so you can quickly feel at home, it can be hard to prioritize what should be done first! Learn what to do after moving in.

Safety First

Find the fuse box and main water supply so you can turn off water and power in case of an emergency! Check windows and doors to ensure they open and close properly and check all locks to have peace of mind in the new place. Locating your gas shut-off and water heater is also a good idea, and test carbon monoxide and fire alarms! And, don’t forget to plan any evacuation routes in case of a fire or other disaster!

Inspect Your Home and Belongings

Go around your home and do one more walkthrough, take photos of things that may seem damaged, and get a feel for where you want to place bigger items around the house. Once your movers arrive, go down your inventory and ensure everything made it to the new location, inspect any big pieces, and check all breakables and valuables! Make sure no boxes were damaged, or if moving in inclement weather, prioritize unpacking wet boxes to reduce the possibility of mold and damage to the possessions inside.

Break Out The Mop and Broom

Before you touch any boxes, gather your cleaning supplies and give your new place a deep clean. There’s no telling how detailed of a cleaning any previous tenants or construction crews performed so it’s always best to get it done yourself! Get inside any appliances, clear up drains and give yourself a fresh start!

Organize and Unpack

Don’t try to unpack the whole home at once. Take it room by room to help break up the task into smaller, more manageable pieces. Once you’ve figured out where you’re going to put things, only then should you start to open up those boxes so you can efficiently unpack all your belongings!

Get your clothing racks, shoe organizers, and storage containers ready to sort your clothing and find the perfect place for every book, knick-knack, and toy!

Update Records

Go to USPS.com and change your mailing address! Every adult in the household will need to undergo the quick and easy process to ensure all your mail is rerouted! You’ll also need to update your address for any bills, credit cards, and subscriptions, so it’s all up to date.
