A New Home Cleaning Checklist

According to this Austin news station, KXAN, mold, ragweed, and cedar are prevalent from October through December. Austin allergies are bad enough to handle but even worse to deal with on moving day.

When you step inside a new home or apartment, there’s something fresh about the blank walls and cabinets. While the previous owners probably left the place pretty clean, it’s always a good idea to disinfect your new home before moving your possessions inside.

Cleaning your home before you move in is essential to maintaining your health and safety. You never know what allergens or germs might be inside!

Clean in Those Hard-To-Reach Spots First

Nooks and crannies are never easy to clean, nor are they cleaned as often. If you’re messing with dust, make sure you wear a mask before washing to avoid irritating your allergies.

Ceiling Fan Blades

An excellent hack for ceiling fan blades is spraying down with your favorite cleaner and placing a pillowcase over the edge. Once you wipe down, all the dust will collect in your casing.

Lighting Fixtures

Wipe down lighting figures with your favorite spray and microfiber cloth. It’s always good to wipe with one wet cloth and use a dry cloth to get any extra dust left behind.

Cabinet Space and Shelves

You never know if previous owners forgot to clean the top of your cabinets. Get a stool and wipe it down with your favorite cleaner. Once you’ve started on cabinets, it’s good to do the rest of the kitchen, including the appliances.

The Little Things

Think about dusting the ceiling, tops of every door, windows, light switches, and closet interiors. For most of these areas, consider a good vacuum to get the job done right.

Time to Look at Your Bathrooms

Bathroom cleaning is more about disinfection than making sure everything is spotless. A simple combination of Dawn dish soap and microfiber clothes might be all you need unless you’d like to use a disinfectant spray.

If you’re cleaning a new house in Texas and don’t have a water softener, hard water stains will be something to look out for. We recommend a vinegar-based cleaner to get rid of these stains with less elbow grease.

Tackle the Floors

Wood, Tile, and Linoleum

Sweep up everything in the area, then consider mopping with your favorite cleaner. If there’s grime in any grout or corners, use a cheap toothbrush and gloves to scrub away your worries.

Carpet

Make sure you vacuum these floors first, then try to treat the floors with a steam vacuum. If you don’t own one, you can always call a reliable professional to steam clean the house for you.
