At Capital Movers, we’re the experts when it comes to packing and moving. We offer our packing services, but if you want to pack yourself, you’ll be a pro in no time with these helpful tips on the best way to pack dishes.

Materials Needed to Pack Dishes

These materials are dependent on what you’d like to do.

If you want to be earth-conscious and useless bubble wrap, you can use household fabrics like towels, pillowcases, and sheets. If you feel more comfortable with bubble wrap cushioning your dishes, go ahead and use what feels best to you.

Regardless, everything else on the list is key to packing up your kitchen.

Assemble Your Boxes

Assemble an estimated number of medium-sized boxes. It’s okay if you don’t prepare enough boxes at first. You can always add them as you go.

Ensure theyare well-taped sothat the box won’t break open from the weight of your dishes. We recommend taping horizontally and vertically to create a cross at the bottom of your package.

Line the bottom of each box with crumbled-up paper or a thick layer of fabric. The bottom layer should be at least six inches of cushion for your dishes.

Organize and Layer Your Dishes for Your Move

Organize the dishes that need to be packed according to type. We want to stack the plates on the bottom and fold fabric or cut bubble wrap to layer between each dish. Then, place bowls and cups on top.

Never leave any room for the dishes and pack any extra space with fabric or crumpled packing paper.

The key is to weigh down your box with the heaviest dishes first, then use the top layer to rest light pieces such as glasses and more cushion.

Pack It Up for the Movers

Test the dish box’s weight by lifting it as you pack. You never want to pack your boxes too heavy. It makes it easier to drop them if you can’t handle their weight.

Once you’ve packed your dishes to a comfortable weight, layer the remaining space with as much cushion as you can fit. Tape up the boxes just as you prepared them. Make sure they’re well-taped.

Next, label your box as detailed as possible. Don’t just put down the kitchen. Make sure you label what is in the box and if the contents are fragile. You can use either labels and markers or write on a piece of paper and tape it over the box.
