It Ain’t Easy Being Green
The best way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is by dressing (and decorating) for the occasion… and that means lots of green. Get out your green food coloring, washable green paint pens, green felt pens, and greenest of green herbs and party favors. Ireland is famous for its rolling green hills—it’s not called the “Emerald Isle” for nothing—so plan your color scheme accordingly. Green, with a side of green, with a green garnish on top if you’re feeling adventurous.
(Sham)rock and Roll
It’s not a St. Patrick’s Day celebration until the house is plastered with four-leaf clovers. Whether you select shamrock glitter, edible shamrock candies, or the tasteful real thing as table decorations, make sure that every guest leaves the party with a little luck ‘o the Irish in their pocket!
Go Meat or Go Home (Or Both)
It’s traditional to go really overboard with meat and meat byproducts on St. Patrick’s Day. From corned beef to Shepherd’s Pie, you can really get your protein fix. Why the fascination with meat? Historically, March 17th was the one day during Lent when the (Catholic) Irish were allowed to eat meat (that wasn’t fish). So today, make sure to celebrate with a meat-based dish.
Pot ‘O Gold
Whether it’s a tankard of golden mead or a bubbling caldron of queso, don’t forget to feature a rainbow in your party decorations that ends in a delicious pot of gold in your celebrations. Recipes abound for edible decorations like these, from the veggie rainbow to a yummy potato soup. Add a pot o’ gold to any St. Paddy’s Day party for some real Irish flair.
Party Like A Leprechaun
What’s a St. Patrick’s Day bash without a little leprechaun mischief? If you have your own wee leprechauns at home, try hiding shamrocks around the house for them to find, baking leprechaun cookies, or even making sheep cupcakes. If all else fails, don’t forget that you can always purchase a “Leprechaun Piggyback Costume”.
Beer.
It doesn’t get any more Irish than a good pint. Whether you dump a load of green food coloring in it is your call, but make sure to sit down and enjoy a real Irish beer this St. Patrick’s Day. While individual tastes may vary, Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale and O’Hara’s Irish Stout are good places to start.
Slithery Snacks
Legend has it that St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland, so that the Irish people could live unplagued by scaly intruders for the rest of their days. While this might not be exactly true—you’ll have to ask an Irishman to be sure—you can honor this legend by serving yummy snake-shaped snacks at your St. Patrick Day celebration.
