Halloween is just around the corner, and you know what that means… It’s spooky season! From graveyards on the front lawn to candy corn scattered liberally in snack bowls throughout the house, the days leading up to October 31st are a haunting season of costumes, candy, and ghoulish fun.
Short on costuming or decorating ideas this year? Don’t worry ‘bout it. If you’ve got a single cardboard box in your house, you’ve got a costume just waiting to happen. Here are our top five favorite ways to reuse cardboard boxes in some uncanny ways.
1. Legos
If you’re short on time, Lego block costumes are a great fix in a pinch, requiring only a big box, a pair of scissors, a six circular tubs, and some spray paint. They’re super easy to make and it takes fifteen minutes, tops. Just glue the circular tubs to a rectangular box in neat rows like you’d find on a Lego. Then, cut off the flaps and cut a circular hole in the top for a head, add holes in the sides for arms, and you’re good to go. Feeling creative? Add a head block, and now you’re a Lego PERSON.
2. Robot monster
Need some Halloween lawn décor that isn’t a singing inflatable witch or yet another dangling skeleton like the neighbors? Think outside the box by building your very own scary robot monster in the front yard. Think like a snowman: a big box for the body, a box with paper towel tubes attached for arms in the middle, and a smaller box for the head. Draw on a creepy snarling face and add inner mechanized workings on the front or go above and beyond and glue on some paper bits, metal, or even socks for guts. 3. Space station
If you want to create a fun theme for your home and your kids’ costumes, dress your offspring as astronauts and build a space station out of boxes! Let the kids help, and you’ll end up with an out-of-this-world design never before seen by mankind. 4. Airplane
An airplane is another great Halloween costume or decoration idea. If your child is big enough to want to wear the box, by all means, strap it on their shoulders like a backpack, but if they’re smaller, you can just put your child inside. The process is simple: take a box, cut holes in it for arms and legs if necessary, and add wings and a tail with a little duct tape and extra cardboard. Don’t forget to add paint or stickers!
5. Dinosaur
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the classic T-rex dinosaur box costume. While you can technically choose any type of dinosaur—good luck with the Pterodactyl design—one of the simplest is the T-rex. With just three boxes and the spray paint of your choice, you can go straight to terrorizing herbivores and an inability to reach the floor in no time.
