Mapping Your Move in a New Home

So, it’s almost time for the big day…moving day! You’ve been planning, packing, and preparing for the day when you finally move into your new home. You’re excited and so is the rest of the family. You carefully made your checklist and plans so you don’t forget all the important things to do prior to moving.

You think you have everything covered. But what happens once you get into the house? You only planned on “your” side of the move, but what about the other side of the move? You really don’t want the movers to simply plop everything down right in the middle of the living room. You realize there are a few more steps you need to take before that big day arrives. Here are a few tips and tricks for mapping your move.

Map out the house for furniture placement

First things first. Before you can determine where all your furniture needs to go, you will need to have a rough layout of the house and how things will fit. You’ll need to make a trip over to the house but before you do, measure all your furniture first and write it down on a piece of paper.

Next, take a ride over to the new house. Look around and envision where you want your furniture to go. Take measurements to ensure things will fit the way you envision it. If, for example, the couch will fit where you want it to go, then write it down on a piece of paper. It may be best if you can sketch out the layout of the house and then label couch where you want it. Otherwise, you need to get pretty descriptive about where you want different things to go. If you really want to make things easy on yourself, check out the free app MagicPlan. This app allows you to snap a picture and it computes the measurement for you.

Move on to the next room and continue the process. Decide how dressers will fit next to beds and where extra pieces can fit in. The layout will heavily depend on the size of your room and the size of your bed. If you have any large items like a buffet table or china cabinet, find the exact place you’d like those pieces to remain and make sure it will fit with the other furniture. There will likely be a lot of plan changing, depending on whether you’ve moved into a larger or a smaller home.

Find out how it will look

If you want to get creative and see how things will look beforehand, you could use a floor design app such as Floor Plan Creator or Homestyler Interior Design. These apps allow you to see what the furniture will look like in your new home! Now, that’s awesome! If you don’t like how something looks, you can always move it virtually before you have to do it physically. Being able to see all your furniture in your new home will be a real treat because it will save you time and physical effort in the end.

Label those boxes

You may have labeled those boxed to tell you what’s inside, but now you need to write down what room they should go in. This will make unpacking a breeze. You don’t want your boxes all in one room or in wrong rooms. If your movers don’t know where you want them, then you’re stuck trying to tell them where to put them – in real time! Make sure your boxes are appropriately labeled (sometimes color coding helps) and indicate on the label which room they’re designated to be placed in. This also makes it easier for you after the big move – not having to move boxes throughout the entire house on your own.
