Thinking of an Austin move? Whether you’re coming or going, Capital Movers has packed up a few tips that will help you along the way. After all, a move in Austin, just like the city itself, is no ordinary experience. Our Austin moving tips will keep things easy and interesting.
Scale Down the Clutter
Have a garage sale or two to clear out things that you don’t need to move with. Old toys, books, and clothes that you no longer use can either be sold or donated. Consignment stores are a great way to get furniture that you don’t need out of the way, especially if you’re downsizing, simplifying (or just want an excuse to buy new stuff). Same goes for clothes! There are plenty of places around Austin to do this, like Second Time Around, Top Drawer and Buffalo Exchange.
Eat What You Can While You Can
Move everything out of the pantry and take stock. If you can eat it before you go, do it. Get creative with your menu….creamed corn and rice could be interesting. Better yet, donate those canned goods that you’ve never gotten around to eating to Austin’s Hope Food Pantry. Only pack items that don’t take up space and that you want to have on-hand when you get where you’re going. The half-eaten box of Cheez-its is probably not essential.
Pack Smarter
Make sure you label boxes on the tops and sides so you can find it no matter what position they’re put in. There are apps to help you out which by cataloging photos of the contents of your boxes and assign them names or numbers. Then, when you need to find the cowboy boots you bought when you decided to make the move to the ATX, they are at the ready to be broken in while you explore the city! Make sure you carefully pack those fragile items!
Or you could always just let someone else do it for you.
Make Sure You Fuel Up!
You thought we were talking about a rental truck, right? No way. You have to make sure your body is fueled with some substantial Austin fare. Stop by Torchy’s first thing in the morning and grab your favorite breakfast taco along with a strong cup of coffee to help get you moving. If by chance, someone actually “volunteered” to help you move, it’s good form to grab something for them to munch on too.
Lift with Your Knees
If you’re doing it on your own, ensure that you know the proper techniques for lifting everything from boxes to heavy objects, and know the best way to secure them when using other equipment. We just make it look easy, safety needs to be a concern. After all, you want to hit the ground running in your new place, not just hit the ground. Besides, you’ll need all the energy you can muster for that 5K that’s coming up (trust us, there’s always one coming up) and for a jog around Town Lake. If you are moving something special, like a piano or other large, sophisticated or otherwise difficult to move but valuable object, hire a professional. It’s not worth the headache or heartache.
Enjoy Moving Day
Whether the time has come to explore opportunities beyond Austin or you are new to the capital city, making time to either explore the sites and sounds or bid a fond farewell is important in an Austin move. When you hire Capital Movers, you’ll be able to enjoy the Austin experience that much sooner. So, grab some breakfast tacos, kick back and let us do the work for you.
